About

Welcome to Backpacking Kids!

I am a 40-something mother of two, living in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado. I am starting this blog as a resource for parents and kids who love backpacking together. I will share trip reports and photos, review backpacking gear, and share tips that make backpacking easier and more fun for the whole family. I hope that my friends and family will also contribute, and that I will make new “virtual” friends who will post their experiences.

There are lots of backpacking blogs already out there, of course. I will include some that I recommend (and read) in this blog. But I have not found many blogs specifically focused on backpacking with children. So I decided to start my own.

Thanks for reading, and please feel free to respond to posts on this blog with your own insights or trip suggestions for backpacking with children. Posts that are inappropriate will be removed.

Thanks for reading, now get outside!

Sweet! We started our blog for similar reasons. I’m so thrilled to find you that I’m posting this before reading everything.

    • Hi Birch! Great to meet you! I took a quick look at your blog but will look in more detail later. Perhaps if I had found it before, I wouldn’t have started my own. Who knows, maybe one day you can bring the kids out to CO for a backpacking trip and we can go together.

I really enjoyed reading about your backpacking adventures with your family. Lucky Bums shares a very similar passion for the outdoors, always trying to encourage kids to get outside and create lasting memories with their families. I would love to help you with research the next time you write on this topic, maybe we could add some advertising into the mix also. I look forward to hearing from you!

    • Hi Katie! Thanks for your comment. I am not familiar with Lucky Bums, but I will take a look at it. It certainly sounds like we have the same goals. I’ll get it touch and maybe we can find some ways to help each other.

  3. So great to see a blog like this. My kids are grown now, but we took them hiking and camping from the time they were born. My daughter became a geologist and my son works in the wind turbine industry. Both spend as much time in the outdoors as they can, and say those camping trips were the best part of childhood.

    • Wonderful! I have no idea what my kids will grow up to be. My son has said he wants to be a pilot, a forest ranger, and a boat captain in the past. Last year my daughter said she wanted to be a policeman! But whatever they become, I know they will have fond memories of hiking and backpacking in the mountains. Hopefully they will share similar experiences with their own children.
